Which lubricant to choose?

Which lubricant to choose?

Choosing a lubricant can be a little bit about trial and error but understanding the different properties and any limitations can be a great first step in making your choice.

Water-based

Water-based lubricants are typically the most popular for anyone using condoms - this is because oils can make latex breakdown which is the last thing you want in that situation!

Key points about water-based lubricants:

  • Tend to feel "lighter" and more fluid than their oil-based counterparts
  • They also tend to be not as messy to use as they wipe off hands/fingers easily
  • Water-based lubricants are safe to use with condoms and silicone sex toys.

Try Rumer's water-based lubricant or Simply Lube

Oil-based

Oil-based lubricants have a thicker feel and tend to be more moisturising.  They can be a bit messier to apply so you might want a little towel nearby for wiping fingers on so you don't leave oily handprints on your sheets!

Key points about oil-base lubricants:

  • Suitable for people who aren't using condoms
  • Safe to use with silicone toys
  • Ideal for those who would like a thicker, perhaps longer-lasting sensation
  • Often more mature women like the soothing feel of a thicker lubricant.

Try Nu Balm or Rumer's oil-based lubricant.

Silicone

Silicone lubricant has a very luxurious feel and stays slippery until it has washed off.  Interestingly, it doesn't leave an oily-sheen on your fingers even though you can still feel the friction-free effect.

Key points about silicone lubricants:

  • It lasts and lasts so is ideal for long sex sessions and for those who don't like to stop to reapply lube.
  • It can't be used with silicone toys as silicone on silicone leads to a bonding type reaction that will make the surface of your toy tacky...which then makes it difficult to clean.
  • However, it CAN be used with the love.not war range of Neo Silicone toys.
  • Safe for use with latex and polyisoprene condoms

Try Überlube.
